Nippon Modus 105 Vs Kbs C Taper Lite

  • The C-Taper Lite shafts have KBS's brushed satin finish, and are available for order now with shipping starting July 8. The R-Flex C-Taper Lite shafts weigh 105 grams, with the S-Flex weighing 110 grams and the X-flex weighing 115 grams. They'll cost around $39 per shaft.
  • Re: KBS C Taper lite 110 vs std 120 gram beware from the C Tapers, they are very sensitive to swing speed in terms of ball dispersion. For me the R was a disaster kept going all over the place, the S was much better and S+ or soft stepped X-stiff worked fine.
  • I've got the Nippon Modus 105 in my new Mizuno JPX900 Forged irons. I've always played Dynamic Gold S300, but the Mizuno fitter tried a variety of shafts during custom fitting and the Nippon Modus 105 in X-flex came out best. Shot my best ever score (net 63) today, so I'm very happy with the clubs and shaft choice.
  • The C-TAPER LITE shaft incorporates proven KBS performance benefits in a lighter weight design. The firm tip and soft butt produce a mid-high trajectory and controlled spin. Featuring a constant taper design and proportionate increase in wall thickness, the C-TAPER LITE optimizes energy transfer for maximum distance.

Nippon shafts, especially the N. S. Pro 950GH, have been the 'go to' shaft on the LPGA Tour for several years. But recently, the Modus 3 models have started making significant inroads on the PGA Tour.

I would love to compare on of the Nippon Modus 3 Tour X shafts to the KBS C-Taper X. I have read and been told the Nippon Modus 3 is a lot like the playing charismatics in terms of spin and launch angle except it feels a lot smoother. It is slightly less workable then the DG x100 and slightly less spin. I don't know if that holds to be true or not.

The Modus3 line is a heavier weight (115 – 130 gram) line designed for faster swing speeds and tempos. The first models, the Modus3 Tour 120, is a mid launch shaft with solid feel and mid spin. Compared to the Modus3 130, the 120 feels a little smoother due to its softer butt section. The Modus3 130 has a very firm butt and mid section with a softer tip for higher launch. Sergio Garcia is playing the 130 because his very late release and steep attack angle means he needs to use a shaft that stays with him (stiff butt section) but allows for a higher launch at impact (softer tip). Not every golfer, however, may experience this higher launch if they cannot load the shaft properly. I was a case in point where I actually hit the Modus3 130 lower than the 120.

Just being introduced this week is the Modus3 125. I really like the feel and performance of this shaft. The Modus 3 125 the lowest launching of the three models with about the same spin rate. This means a lower peak height but still a good landing angle for holding greens. I will do a more technical review of these three shafts in a future blog but think of these three shafts in this way:

Modus3 120: Plays similar to KBS C-Taper Lite and XP 115. Mid launch and spin.

Samsung dvd writer se 218 driver for mac. Modus3 130: Plays similar to KBS Tour and original Dynamic Gold XP and Dynamic Golf HL. Mid to Mid-high launch and mid spin.

Modus3 125: Plays similar to KBS C-Taper and Dynamic Gold S300/X100. Mid-Low launch with mid spin.

Now we have several different steel shaft options in the 115 – 130 gram weight range so we can really dial in the launch, spin, max. height and feel for our golfers.

The N.S Pro Modus3 Tour105 was released to the US public in August 2015. I had seen a set of these earlier in the year, labeled Prototype ST. The Modus3 Tour 105 is the same shaft that has been available on tour for several months. The word Prototype has been replaced with Modus3. I have been told it was put in play by a number of players. Lighter weight iron shafts are gaining broader acceptance in the tour community.

I am revisiting this review with a new look at the charts and numbers. As I prepared graphics for a speech to European club fitters I saw something in the charts that got my attention. A close look at the shafts confirmed what I saw in the graphics.

This is a discussion about Nippon Golf Shaft shot at the 2016 PGA Merchandise show. Be warned, it is a technical discussion between technical fitters.

The English Nippon Shaft site has been significantly updated recently. The update shows and explains the EI profiles of the Modus products. The section of that site that discusses EI profiles is excerpted below. When one of my fitting associates happened on it, I got a call telling me they copied my graphics. I had to explain, sorry, in fact, they were first, I copied them. Nippon and the other major shaft companies have designed and manufactured shafts with 3 point EI software for decades. It is only now, that the golfer and club makers are developing literacy in the language of the shaft engineer.
Nippon is one of the few shaft companies that has for many years explained and defined their products to club fitters with EI graphics. The other is Mitsubishi Rayon. The 2015 Fujikura shaft product brochure does the same. This is the language by which one can under the subtle nuances of today's shaft choices.
